School and Community Youth Group Courses

High School Programs-Grades 9, 10, 11 & 12

Environmental Expedition: 5-day environmental program (on-island or sailing)

Goals: Students will investigate marine and island ecosystems through hands-on, island-based and/or sailboat-based activities. Environmental stewardship and group cooperation will be emphasized through non-competitive games, low ropes challenges and group sailing. The sail boats or "pulling boats" are designed to be sailed cooperatively. In addition students set up camp and cook on board. Ultimately the group sails together as a team.

Curriculum Standards: Environmental science, age appropriate social and emotional growth

Program Elements: Island based or sailing options

Location: Thompson Island, Boston Harbor Islands National Park Area. Optional: Boston Harbor and Massachusetts Bay.

Peer-Leadership Expedition: 3 to 5-day wilderness expedition focusing on leadership skills

Goals: Students will practice leadership skills and learn to work as a team on this wilderness expedition. Successful mastery of physical and social/emotional challenges will help students gain self-confidence and greater compassion for their peers. Students will learn leadership techniques and skills, and practice leading their group during this expedition.

Curriculum Standards: Responsibility, courage, collaboration, initiative

Program Elements: Sailing, backpacking, canoeing or island-based

Location: Thompson Island, Boston Harbor Islands National Park Area, Boston Harbor or White Mountains of New Hampshire

Insight Program : one-day team building program

Goals: Students will learn about group cooperation, problem solving, communication and compassion.

Core Values: Learning through Experience, Character Development and Compassion

Curriculum Standards: Collaboration, consideration, compassion, courage

Program Elements: Games, initiatives, low ropes

Location: Thompson Island, Boston Harbor Islands National Park Area

Community: 2-day community building program

Goals: Students will participate in a progression of activities including non-competitive games, diversity workshops, and group problem solving challenges which focus on cross-cultural understanding. Peaceful conflict resolution and health dialogue about differences will be emphasized.

Core Values: Character Development, Social and Environmental Responsibility

Curriculum Standards: Collaboration, compassion, and diversity awareness

Program Elements: Games, workshops, initiatives, low ropes

Location: Thompson Island, Boston Harbor Islands National Park Area

(Undefeatable) Spirit Program: one day high ropes challenge program

Goals: Students will build resiliency, self-confidence, trust in their peers, and gain some mastery over climbing skills

Core Values: Adventure and Challenge, Character Development

Curriculum Standards: Personal goal setting and teamwork

Program Elements: Games, climbing 64' Alpine Tower, belay school, initiatives

Location: Thompson Island, Boston Harbor Islands National Park Area

Urban Expedition: 3 to 5-day cultural exploration, backpacking in the city of Boston

Goals: Students will explore Boston communities from a cultural and historical perspective, and complete service projects.

Core Values: Character Building, Compassion and Service, Social Responsibility

Curriculum Standards: History/social studies, service, collaboration, compassion, physical fitness, respect for diversity

Program Elements: Backpacking, community research, cultural workshops, and service projects

Location: Thompson Island, Boston Harbor Islands National Park Area, Boston
