Thompson Island Outward Bound's Program for Boston's urban youth, Choices, in its tenth year. The Choices expeditions brings middle-schoolers from eight Boston Public Schools to Thompson Island for five days of community-building, confidence-building and self-reliance. Students go through our ropes courses, climb our climbing structures, cook for themselves, camp out in many types of weather, and emerge as a stronger, more compassionate group. Choices also has a school-based component, with Outward Bound instructors stationed in the public schools, where they lead teambuilding and other activities in the classroom. This reinforces the community spirit and individual strengths that emerge during the on-island expeditions.
A continuum of opportunities for young people enabled Choices graduates to participate in Summer Outward Bound Expeditions through the Thompson Island Outward Bound Scholarship Fund and receive placements in the Green Corps Summer Work Program.
