Green Corps
A summer work program for Choices graduates

The Green Corps is a summer work program available to students who have graduated from the Choices program. For seven weeks, students conduct service projects on the Boston Harbor Islands while developing leadership skills.

The Green Corps also engages youth in the National Park system. They take care of backlog maintenance projects for the federal agency while developing a strong work ethic and gaining awareness of career opportunities. The program is supported by the National Park Service and the Boston Youth Fund. Approximately 30 students make up the corps each year.

Here are some frequently-asked questions about the Green Corps:

What type of projects will I do if I join?

These are examples of past projects:

  • Clearing trails and campsites on Bumpkin Island
  • Replacing a fence on Sandy Neck to protect the piping plover
  • Replacing a sign for the Cape Cod National Seashore, clearing trails and cleaning up the parking lot and roads
  • Replacing a monkey bridge on Thompson Island and clearing a site for an outdoor classroom
  • Removing a dilapidated boardwalk and restoring a cranberry bog on Cape Cod
  • Cataloging historical artifacts at Boston Light
  • Painting the building around Boston Light for the Coast Guard

Where else might I work?

  • Grape Island
  • Woods Hole
  • Quabbin Reservoir
  • The New England Aquarium
  • The Emerald Necklace
  • Arnold Arboretum
  • The African-American Freedom Trail
  • And more!

What else will we do in this program?

At the beginning of the program you’ll tour parks throughout the state of Massachusetts, even camping in some of them. In addition to the work projects, you will keep a journal and complete a two-page report at the end of the summer. You will also prepare for and attend the mayor’s youth summit.

Will I get paid?

Yes.

How will I benefit from this program?

First, you’ll gain the type of work experience that most people don’t get until they are done with high school. This will impress future employers and college admissions officers. Furthermore, you get a head start in looking at career options. You will see what it’s like to work in a number of outdoor and environmental careers. This will help you decide what you’d like to do for work, or what you’d like to study in college. This program is especially great if you'd like to eventually work as a park ranger or as an outdoor instructor.

How can I apply?

First, you must have already participated in the Choices program. You must be between 14 and 17 years old. And you must be enrolled in the Boston Public Schools. If all of those apply, contact Jacalyn Wallace at 617-328-3900 x 129.
