Youth Jobs Programs

Through a partnership with the National Park Service, Thompson Island Outward Bound offers job opportunities for youth age 15-18 from the greater Boston area. These jobs, which are based in the Boston Harbor Island National Park Area, are designed to develop life skills, workforce readiness, and environmental stewardship. Youth will experience hot, buggy conditions clearing trails, monitoring invasive species, and constructing public use features on the beautiful Harbor Islands, all while building teamwork, having a blast, and learning job skills. In addition to having the unique chance to contribute a youth perspective to park governance, youth will also be exposed to career paths with Outward Bound, National Park Service, and other “green collar” careers. We currently have two summer job offerings to which youth can apply: Green Corps and Island Ambassadors.

Green Corps

Green Corps is a youth summer jobs program that employs 24 students age 15-18 from Boston in environmental stewardship projects on Thompson Island and other Boston Harbor Islands. Green Corps projects focus on garden, trails, and facilities maintenance, including developing a composting and recycling program for Thompson Island. Youth will also participate in life and work skills development workshops and will be provided opportunities for peer leadership, mentoring, and curriculum development for other TIOBEC youth programs.

Island Ambassadors

Island Ambassadors is a youth summer jobs program that employs 16 students age 15-18 from the Greater Boston area in environmental stewardship, public outreach, citizen science, and career exploration in the Boston Harbor Islands national park area. A fundamental aspect of this program is that Island Ambassadors are protectors, providers and caretakers of the park. Youth will be trained to develop leadership skills, build positive relationships with peers, and educate their communities about the Boston Harbor Islands national park area.
